German Interpretations

The frequency of multilingual meetings and events continues to increase as businesses and organizations add employees, customers, and partners around the world. Meetings and events are more engaging and inclusive when everyone speaks the same language, but that is not always possible. Human interpreters and translators are an option, but the high cost and logistical complexity limits their use to big budget events and organizations.

Wordly solves the multilingual collaboration problem with a proven, high quality, highly scalable AI-powered interpretation platform which provides simultaneous interpretation into German and dozens of other languages. Speakers and attendees each select their preferred language at the start of the session - selecting from live translated captions or audio - and using their mobile phone, tablet, or computer. Offering translation services is a great way to increase engagement, productivity, and inclusivity.

German Language History

What is the History of the German language?
The German language, a West Germanic language, traces its roots back to Proto-Germanic, the shared ancestor of all Germanic languages. It evolved over centuries into a distinct language, shaped by historical, cultural, and political changes in the regions of modern-day Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and beyond.

  • Old High German (500–1050 CE): The earliest form of German, Old High German, began to emerge around 500 CE. It developed from Proto-Germanic, influenced by the Second Sound Shift, which differentiated High German dialects from Low German. The introduction of Christianity brought Latin vocabulary and literacy, with the first written texts appearing, such as Hildebrandslied and Abrogans.
  • Middle High German (1050–1350 CE): Between the 11th and 14th centuries, the language transitioned to Middle High German. It became a prominent literary language, with works like the Nibelungenlied and poetry by Walther von der Vogelweide. Dialects flourished during this period, but there was no standardized German. Cultural exchanges through the Crusades and trade introduced French and Latin influences.
  • Early New High German (1350–1650 CE): The German language underwent significant transformation during this period. Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible (1522–1534) helped unify regional dialects and laid the groundwork for modern Standard German. The invention of the printing press allowed vernacular German texts to spread widely, enhancing literacy and language consistency.
  • Modern German (1650–Present): By the 17th and 18th centuries, efforts to standardize grammar and spelling culminated in the development of Modern High German. Philosophers, poets, and scholars like Goethe and Schiller elevated German as a language of culture and intellect. After World War II, English exerted considerable influence on German vocabulary, particularly in science and technology. Today, German is spoken by over 100 million people worldwide, serving as an official language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries. It continues to evolve, embracing globalization and technological innovation while retaining its deep cultural and historical roots.
